ESET Microsoft security update (KB2286198) hangs or causes a BSOD on restart

If you are experiencing a system hang or blue screen error after attempting to install Microsoft security update (KB2286198), you will need to update your ESET security product. This issue is due to a potential conflict with the Windows update and ESET NOD32 Antivirus and ESET Smart Security. Downloading a new ESET virus signature update (version 5338 and later) will resolve this issue. To update your ESET security product, follow the steps below:

Open the main program window by clicking the ESET icon next to the system clock or by clicking Start All Programs ESET ESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32 Antivirus.

Click Update from the main menu on the left and click Update virus signature database in the main program window on the right.

The Update status should read: Version of virus signature database: 5338 (20100803). Verify that you have version 5338 or later.

Restart the Windows update process. Visit Microsoft's Windows 7 Solution Center for more information on receiving Windows updates.

Tabs And Windows Firefox Home

Why weren't my tabs and windows restored?

If you had tabs and windows open when you closed Firefox, the new default Firefox home page will have a Restore Previous Session button on it. To get your tabs and windows back, just click it. Restore Previous Session - Win1
If you don't use the default Firefox home page, you can restore your tabs and windows from the History menu:

At the top of the Firefox window, click the Firefox button, go over to History (History menu in Windows XP) and select Restore Previous Session. Restore Previous Session - Win2

For more info about how session restore works, see Session Restore and Firefox does not ask to save tabs and windows on exit.
Why are the menus (File, Edit, View, etc.) missing?

If you're using Windows 7 or Windows Vista, you now have an orange Firefox button that takes the most common functions and puts them in one menu.

To temporarily show the old style menus, just press the Alt key.
To have them shown all the time, right-click on an empty section of the Tab Strip and check Menu Bar in the pop-up menu.
Menu Bar - Win

How do I get the orange Firefox button?

If you're using Windows XP or you've customized your toolbars, you can switch to using the orange Firefox button by:

Right-clicking on an empty section of the Tab Strip and unchecking Menu Bar in the pop-up menu.

See Menu bar is missing for problems with the Menu bar and check out How do I customize the toolbars? for more about arranging Firefox to fit your needs.
What happened to the back, refresh and home buttons?

To streamline the navigation section and group buttons by task, a few things have changed:

The back button drop-down menu can be accessed by clicking and holding on the back button.
The stop and refresh buttons are combined into one button on the right end of the location bar.
The home button is to the right of the location bar.

Nav Buttons - Win
Not crazy about this arrangement? No problem. It's your browser, make Firefox work the way you do. See How do I customize the toolbars? for more about customizing buttons and toolbars.

Right-click on an empty section of the Tab Strip, select Customize... and the Customize Toolbar window will open.
Drag, drop and rearrange items.
To add an item to a toolbar, drag it from the Customize Toolbar window onto the toolbar where you want it to appear.
To remove an item from a toolbar, drag it to the Customize Toolbar window.
To move an item in a toolbar, drag it where you want it to appear.
When you are finished making changes, click Done to close the Customize Toolbar window.

Custom Buttons - Win
What happened to the Status Bar?

The Status Bar at the bottom of the Firefox window has changed. The new Status Bar only shows page loading activity and link previews. When neither of those are needed it simply disappears. Please see What happened to the Status Bar? for more.
Status Bar link - win
Status Bar load - win
Why do my fonts look blurry?

If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, text in Firefox may appear blurry. This is usually due to Windows ClearType not being turned on.

In Windows, click Small Vista Logo and type cleartype in the search box.
Click Adjust ClearType text to open the ClearType control panel.
Check Turn on ClearType and then Next to fine tune your settings.
After you fine tune the ClearType settings, click Finish to accept them.

For more details see, Fonts look blurry. It's also possible that you are also experiencing issues related to outdated graphics card drivers. See How do I upgrade my graphics drivers? for more information, including how to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox as a possible workaround.
Some of my add-ons were disabled. What can I do?

After upgrading, Firefox checks for new versions of your add-ons and disables those that are no longer compatible. By default it will continue to check for new versions periodically. For more info, see Add-ons are disabled after updating Firefox.

Some add-ons (like Firebug) have completely different versions for new versions of Firefox so the auto-update feature won't work. To check for a new version:

At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (Tools menu in Windows XP), and then click Add-ons. The Add-ons Manager tab will open.
In the Add-ons Manager tab, select the Extensions panel.
Click the more link in the add-on's description.
In the detail view, click the homepage link to be taken to the add-on's website where you can search for a newer version.

Where are my bookmarks?

Relax. If you were using the Bookmarks Toolbar to hold your favorite sites you may just have to turn it back on:

Right-click on an empty section of the Tab Strip and check Bookmarks Toolbar in the pop-up menu.
Bookmarks Toolbar - Win

You can also view and organize your bookmarks in the Library window.

Click the Bookmarks button Bookmarks button win 2 on the right side of the navigation toolbar (Windows XP: click the Bookmarks menu) and select Show All Bookmarks to open the Library window.

Bookmarks Button win

For more about using bookmarks, including tagging and organizing, see How do I use bookmarks?
Why are tabs on top of the location bar now?

The main reason is that it just makes more sense — especially with features like App Tabs and the Add-ons Manager. For details on this change, see Why are tabs on top?
How do I put tabs back like they used to be?

Right-click on an empty section of the Tab Strip and uncheck Tabs on Top in the pop-up menu.

Kaspersky Rescue Disk 01.05.2011

Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 is a free and safe program to remove viruses from a computer without the risk of getting infected! Kaspersky Rescue Disk is designed to scan and disinfect x86 and x64-compatible computers that have been infected. The application should be used when the infection is so severe that it is impossible to disinfect the computer using anti-virus applications or malware removal utilities (such as Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool) running under the operating system. In this case, disinfection is more efficient because malware programs do not gain control when the operating system is being loaded. In the emergency repair mode, you can only start objects scan tasks, update databases roll back updates and view statistics. Boot from the Kaspersky Rescue Disk to scan and remove threats from an infected PC without the risk of infecting other files or computers. Burn this ISO image to a CD, insert it into the infected system's CD-ROM drive, enter the PC's BIOS, set it to boot from the CD and reboot the PC.

File Is Missing Or Corrupt

A student brought a laptop into the desk that would display “Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM”.

The affected system was a Dell Latitude D620 running Windows XP Professional SP2.
There are several variations of this problem. Errors in \System and \Software are the two most common. After research through the Microsoft KB article located at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545 i was able to water it down a bit for this scenario. Note that i recommend reading through and following the steps in order, but for the \SYSTEM error, I only needed a few of the commands.

First off, you need to grab your Windows CD, and boot into the recovery console. This is done by booting to your CD-ROM (F12 on a Dell System), letting the Windows installer load, and then selecting R for Recovery console at the first menu that give you an option to do anything. After pressing R, log onto your windows installation by pressing the appropriate number (usually 1) and enter your Administrator password if prompted. If you don’t remember your administrator password, you will need to reset it using a Linux disk. That is a topic for a separate post.

Once successfully in the recovery console, run the following commands, in order.

md tmp
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
exit

Once your computer reboots, you should be presented with the Windows XP loading screen, and eventually your desktop.

Uninstall Offfice 2007 or 2010 through Add/Remove Programs

This morning i was trying to upgrade a user from Office 2007 to Office 2010. For whatever reason, the install failed and did a roll back on the installation. Unfortunately, when i tried to install Office 2010 again, i found out that the roll back did not completely remove the failed Office 2010 install. I was presented with this error message:
“Description: Setup did not complete successfully. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: Office12Setup
Problem Signature 01: {10140000-0F00-0000-0000–0000000FF1CE}
Problem Signature 02: 14.0.4755.1000
Problem Signature 03: X
Problem Signature 04: 1603
Problem Signature 05: Word.en-us\setup.xml
Problem Signature 06: X
Problem Signature 07: X
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033″

I went to Add/Remove programs and noticed both Office 2007 and Office 2010 were listed. I simply tried to remove Office 2010 and received the following error message:
Office 2010 Install Error
Office 2010 Install Error
After this setback, i couldnt install, or uninstall the failed Office 2010 software. Figuring a manual removal of office 2010 was the only way, i set out to find the reg keys and files that i needed to remove. In the process, i found Microsoft KB article 290301 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301. Microsoft has provided .msi uninstall and cleanup tools for Office 2003, 2007, and 2010. I downloaded the 2010 removal tool, and after a few minutes it took care of any remaining files, and i was able to successfully upgrade my Office 2007 install to Office 2010.
For the Office 2003 uninstall,
For the Office 2007 uninstall,
For the Office 2010 uninstall,
Two quick additional notes, alot of forums suggest running the Windows Installer Cleanup utility. Microsoft has stated not to use that tool citing that it could cause additional problems. “This article previously contained a link to the Windows Installer Cleanup utility (MSICUU2.exe). If you were directed to this article to solve a problem installing a product other than Microsoft Office, please contact your software manufacturer for installation support on the product. Or, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article for steps to troubleshoot uninstallation issues with products that use Windows Installer:”
Secondly, If your seeing the above screen shot error when you are trying to install a copy of office that you legally downloaded, make sure you use the build in windows extraction utility. If you use something like Win-Zip or WinRAR, it may not extract properly.
