Preparing To Configure Windows. Please Do Not Turn Off Your Computer

I just bought a Toshiba Laptop for a Client with windows 7 home,

As a favour for my clients I usually run windows update for them so they get it all working and are 100% confident that when they get it as up to date as possible,

I ran into the exact same problem as above, i read this thread and read all different reply's but none of them realy worked for me and i didnt have time to wait...

this is what worked for me:

1. Hold down the power button and switch of your machine
2. Restart your computer and just before windows boots hit the F8 button
3. Boot into safe mode
4. login (if nessecary)
5. Make sure that any virus scanners at this point are disabled before continuing
6. Click "Start" > "Accessories" > "System Restore"
7. Click "Next"
8. Pick an earlier restore point and then click next, (its best to pick the 1 just before you had problems)
9. Click next and follow the prompts and it will start a system restore
10. wait till your computer does this System Restore process
11. Regardless of whether the system restore process fails or passes it should now get you out being stuck at "Preparing To Configure Windows. Please Do Not Turn Off Your Computer."

Now...

12. login if required
13 Disable Virus Scanner before moving on
14. Run windows update
15. now it should run without any problems

16. if you do have problems and run into a loop Call your Computer Manufacturer or the company that you purchased it off and see if they can help you,

Error 646 while installing updates

Issue Summary:

We are aware of a potential issue you may encounter with recent Office Security updates. When installing these updates, the Windows Update control panel returns the error 646 or 0x80070646.

Technical Details:

The error 0x80070646 or 646 is an MSI installer error that will only occur when the updates are installed via the Windows Update control Panel. Previous workaround to resolve the immediate problem requires the installation of the update from a standalone package from the Microsoft Download Center. We do not recommend this workaround.

If Windows Installer logging is enabled, the following line should be noted as a symptom:

Error 1606. Could not access network location %APPDATA%\

Cause:

The problem is potentially a result of an inconsistent/incorrect environmental variable (%AppData%) as shown below:

Solution:

1. Open the Registry editor. To do so, Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit.exe in the Programs list.In the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.

2. Navigate to the following registry keysHKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

3. The correct and default value forAppData should be %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming. To change the value, double click on Appdata, then change the string in the value data field.

4. Close the Registry editor, and try again Windows Update again. (A reboot shouldnot be required.)

5. If the problem persists, repeat the steps 2 through 4 with the following registry keys:

· HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\

· HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\

The task image is corrupt or has been tampered

In order to fix this, you have to delete the actual task XML file that contains the task settings,
then rerun the Task Scheduler to confirm that the error is gone, then import a non-corrupted version of the task back into the Task Scheduler.
Most of the work you have to do is to locate the task file in question.
The task files are located in C:\Windows\System32\Tasks.
If you try to open the task folder, you might get a UAC prompt asking you for permission to access the folder, this is OK, just click continue to access the folder.
In my case, the corrupt task was "Microsoft-Windows-DiskDiagnosticDataCollector".
The task image is corrupt or has been tamperedThis was a Microsoft task, therefore I had to go into the C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows\DiskDiagnostic folder to locate the actual task xml file,
which was named "Microsoft-Windows-DiskDiagnosticDataCollector".

Once you have located the task file, close the task scheduler, back up the corrupted task file to any location of your choice, then delete it, then open the task scheduler to confirm that the error has gone.

What you now need to do is to export the non-corrupted task from another computer or virtual machine, and import it into the task scheduler.
To export the task in question from another computer, follow these steps.

1. Open the Task Scheduler, then drill down into the task in question, then right-click on the task and select "Export...".
2. Save the exported XML file to a location of your choosing, then copy it over to the affected computer.
3. Once you are back on the affected computer, make sure that the task scheduler is closed, then you need to run the task scheduler as an Administrator.
4. To run the task scheduler as an Administrator, click Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, then locate "Task Scheduler", right-click it and select "Run as Administrator".
5. Once the task scheduler is open, drill down to the folder where the task is supposed to be located, right-click on a blank portion of the window, and select "Import Task...".
6. Once you have imported the task, a "Create task" window will open as shown below, just click OK to it.
7. The task should then be successfully imported, you can then close the task scheduler, and the problem should be fully resolved.

Troubleshooting Error Code 10 Fix

Windows 7 Error code 10 is an error that shows on all Windows systems when you either have a driver error, or some other problem with the hardware of your system. Even though this error is continually being shown randomly on your PC, it's got a set list of causes which need to be fixed in order to get rid of the problem for good. This tutorial is going to show you how to fix error code 10 on a Windows 7 system. Here's what you need to do...

The Error code 10 error that forms on Windows 7 will typically show in this format:
Troubleshooting Error Code 10 Fix
Troubleshooting Error Code 10 Fix

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

The cause of the code 10 error on Windows 7 is all down to the way in which your computer is trying to use the hardware it has. The hardware of your PC are all the components you can touch, including the keyboard, hard drives and other peripherals. In order for Windows to work well with these components, it needs to be able to use "drivers" - small software applications which allow your system to use the various hardware components of your PC. The problem you're seeing is either caused by a faulty driver (which stops Windows working with your hardware), or from damaged parts of your Windows system. If you want to fix the error, you need to be able to repair all possible problems that first causes it to show.

To fix the Windows 7 error 10 on your PC, you need to first update all the drivers which may be faulty or damaged on your system. To do this, you should click onto Start > Control Panel > Device Manager, and then look for any hardware icons that have a small yellow exclamation mark by them. This will basically show you that there is a problem with the specific hardware component on your PC, and will allow you to update the driver for it. After that, you should also update Windows to its latest version, which can be done by clicking Start > All Programs > Windows Update. This will basically allow your computer to upgrade to the latest version, which should incorporate some fixes for the Windows 7 error code 10 problem.

It's also recommended that you use what's known as a "registry cleaner" program. This is a type of software that's designed to scan through your PC and fix any errors that are inside the registry database of Windows. The registry database is essentially a central storage center for all the files, settings and options that your computer needs to use each day, and is what lies at the core of every Windows system. Unfortunately, the registry is one of the biggest causes of errors on your computer, and needs to be constantly fixed to ensure it's not leading your PC to run slower or with errors. To do this, you should download a registry cleaner program from the Internet and then let it scan your PC. It will identify any possible errors inside your computer, and then fix the ones that are causing problems. This will often solve a variety of errors, and has been known to cure the Windows 7 error code 10 as well.

Windows 7 gen_ml.dll error with KMPlayer

gen_ml.dll (media library winamp plugin) problem is a common issue in Windows Vista/Windows 7. Playback seemed to work for me, but startup was extremely slow and the screen froze for ten seconds. To avoid it you can do one of the following:

Delete gen_ml.dll from plugins folder if you don’t need it (Recommended) (I tried renaming the file, but it still caused problems)
Install KMP in a folder with admin rights.
Run KMP with admin rights (right click on file -> properties)
Disable UAC in Windows Vista (not recommended)

What is User Account Control?

Every single time you delete a file, Windows asks you “Are you sure you want to move this file to the Recycle Bin?” This is typically a good thing, to prevent you from deleting files by accident, but if you are trying to do some cleanup and need to delete a lot of files, you might not want to be prompted every single time.

There’s a simple way to turn it off.

Right-click on your Recycle Bin
Choose Properties from the menu.

Now you’ll see the Trash Properties dialog, and notice the “Display delete confirmation dialog” at the bottom.

Uncheck the box.
Press Apply, and hit OK

Thats it, although it is recommended to have it turned on.

Adding a device

When you add a Bluetooth device to your computer, address information is exchanged. Sometimes, access keys are also exchanged. This process is known as pairing or bonding the two devices. When you add a device, one of the devices must be discoverable. Some devices let you turn discovery on and off, and others are always discoverable. For example, some mouse devices are always discoverable.

When you use Bluetooth to connect two computers, the computer that is added as a device must have discovery turned on. You can turn on discovery by using the Options tab in Bluetooth Devices.

Steps to take on the computer
To add a device, follow these steps on your computer:

Click Start, click Run, type bthprops.cpl, and then click OK.
In Bluetooth Settings, click Add.
In the Add Bluetooth Device Wizard, click to select the My device is set up and ready to be found check box, and then click Next.

Note You cannot click Next until you click to select the My device is set up and ready to be found box. A device that has discovery turned off cannot be detected during a search.

When you click Next, your computer searches for any discoverable devices that are in range. When the search is complete, the devices appear in the wizard.
Select a device to add, and then click Next.

After you select the device to add, you can enter a passkey for the device. A passkey is a code that is used to control access to a device. Using a passkey may help improve the security of your connection. However, the device that you add may not require a passkey.

When you enter the passkey, your computer tries to connect to the device to verify the passkey. When you connect to another computer, you receive a message that the computers are trying to connect.

Steps to take on the device
When you have completed the steps on your computer, enter the passkey on the Bluetooth device. If the device is another computer, this computer displays a message that indicates that you are requesting a connection. Follow these steps on the computer that you are adding as a Bluetooth device:

Click in the message that indicates that you are requesting a connection.

The Add Bluetooth Device Wizard starts and provides a field for entering the passkey.
Enter the passkey. You may also choose to have a passkey generated for you.

When the passkey is verified, the connection is complete. The device is now visible on your computer. If the device is another computer, its computer name is visible on the first computer.

On the last page of the Add Bluetooth Device Wizard, you can turn discovery off on the computer that you add as a device. By default, the option to turn discovery off is selected so that the computer does not remain discoverable at all times.

After a device is added
After a device is added, it appears in Bluetooth Devices. You can view the device properties to examine the services provided, to change the name of the device, or to gather other information. You can also establish connections.

Kaspersky Rescue Disk 01.05.2011

Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 is a free and safe program to remove viruses from a computer without the risk of getting infected! Kaspersky Rescue Disk is designed to scan and disinfect x86 and x64-compatible computers that have been infected. The application should be used when the infection is so severe that it is impossible to disinfect the computer using anti-virus applications or malware removal utilities (such as Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool) running under the operating system. In this case, disinfection is more efficient because malware programs do not gain control when the operating system is being loaded. In the emergency repair mode, you can only start objects scan tasks, update databases roll back updates and view statistics. Boot from the Kaspersky Rescue Disk to scan and remove threats from an infected PC without the risk of infecting other files or computers. Burn this ISO image to a CD, insert it into the infected system's CD-ROM drive, enter the PC's BIOS, set it to boot from the CD and reboot the PC.

Windows 7 arrives : Windows Vista leaves

The waiting is over, and the upgrading can begin. Today, Microsoft's new Windows 7 operating system arrives in stores and on new computers. Microsoft is celebrating the occasion with characteristic hype, staging a gala event in New York to unveil the software.
Windows 7 arrives

For many PC users, Windows 7's arrival also means it's time to kick Windows Vista to the curb. (Yes, some people say they like Vista; I myself prefer Vista to XP, though that may only reflect how tired I am of the 8-year-old XP.) As I wrote in my column and on this blog last week, I think Windows 7 represents a clear upgrade over its predecessor.

But it's too soon to declare every Windows 7 feature a positive (or negative) development. The responses of users, software developers and hardware manufacturers to this operating system will shape those verdicts. For example, will multiple-Win 7-PC households become common enough that its HomeGroup networking option wins wide use? Will new applications adapt to 7's Libraries folders or will they continue to assume, incorrectly, that all of a user's files belong in one huge My Documents folder? Will gadget developers take advantage of 7's Device Stage interface for managing peripherals? Will computer vendors build affordable machines that take advantage of 7's enhanced support for touch screens?

We'll just have to see about all that.

In the meantime, if you are thinking about upgrading to 7, first run Microsoft's free Upgrade Advisor to make sure that your current system's hardware and software will still work under 7. The Lifehacker blog has more tips about preparing for a Win 7 install, including advice on setting it up alongside an earlier copy of Windows or on a Mac. Ars Technica outlines your purchase and upgrade options, including a couple of ways to get 7 at a discount.

To repeat my own advice about the two most common Win 7 upgrade scenarios: Going from XP to 7 will be be a painful experience requiring either some acquaintance with the workings of Windows or a friend with that knowledge; moving from Vista to 7 should be far easier, but it wouldn't hurt to wait for a couple of weeks to give your computer's manufacturer time to crank out any necessary bug fixes to its software bundle.

If, however, you were waiting to buy a new Windows computer, go ahead. You've been waiting long enough.
Are you reading this post on a computer running Windows 7? Tell me how the new version is working out for you -- post a report on your upgrade experience in the comments.

Microsoft’s Ballmer: Windows 7 is nearly final

Las Vegas: Microsoft Corp.’s next version of the Windows operating system is almost ready for prime time.

That’s one message Chief Executive Steve Ballmer was delivering on the eve of the official opening of the International Consumer Electronics Show.

The world’s largest software maker was also announcing deals to make its Live Search programs the default search engines on more personal computers and mobile phones. And it showed off a new version of its Ford Sync in-car technology that folds in the voice-operated directory service TellMe, which Microsoft bought in 2007.

For years, the opening keynote at CES belonged to Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, whose status as industry pioneer justified the sweeping visions of the future he’d build into his speech. Gates passed the mantle on when he stepped down from day-to-day operations at Microsoft last summer, and Wednesday marked Ballmer’s first time making the high-profile address.

Ballmer was due to announce that a nearly final “beta” test version of Windows 7 is ready for regular PC users to download and tinker with.

The new operating system which could be available for purchase on PCs within a year uses much of the same underlying technology as its predecessor, the much-maligned Vista. But Windows 7 aims to resolve many problems PC users had with Vista. For instance, Microsoft pledges to make it easier to install peripheral devices and to have the software pump out fewer annoying warnings and notifications.

Ballmer is hoping to boost the number of people using Microsoft’s Live Search engine, which ranks well behind Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc. in popularity, through a deal with PC maker Dell Inc. Dell will put a special Live Search browser toolbar and Windows Live programs, including Microsoft’s instant-messaging application, on PCs that it sells. That deal replaces a relationship between Dell and Google.

Microsoft also has formed a partnership with Verizon Wireless that calls for the Live Search tools to be added to all Verizon cell phones in the US that can access the Internet.

Phone to Windows 7 Bluetooth File Transfer

Bluetooth devices are very common nowadays. By using this technology it is so easy to share files between very different devices. If your computer or laptop has a Bluetooth dongle or built-in module, Windows 7 can use it for exchanging files with other Bluetooth enabled devices such as mobile phones, iPods, iPhones, PSP devices, etc. In this guide I will show you how to verify that your dongle or built-in module works, how to connect your computer to another Bluetooth enabled device and how to exchange files between them.
Verify that Bluetooth is Working Correctly
The first thing you should do before starting a Bluetooth connection is to make sure that the Bluetooth dongle or integrated module is inserted in the computer and turned on.
Windows 7 will then install the drivers needed for the Bluetooth device. It has drivers for most Bluetooth dongles and built-in devices but, if it's not able to find any suitable drivers for it, then you should install those which are bundled by the manufacturer of your product via an install disc or on its official website.
Next, you will see a Bluetooth icon in the system tray or notification area which means that Bluetooth is active.
Bluetooth
If it is not active, you'll have to enable Bluetooth on your computer. By default, the wireless and Bluetooth connections are active. If, for some reason, they're not, look for a button on the surface of your laptop that should enable both wireless and Bluetooth connections. If you can't find that button please read the laptop's manual to find it and learn how to turn on Bluetooth.
Now, you need to make sure that the Bluetooth works properly. Type in the Start menu search box the word bluetooth and click on the 'View devices and printers' search result. Another way is to go to 'Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Devices and Printers'.
Bluetooth
In the new window you will see a list with all devices and printers that are connected to your computer. The Bluetooth dongle or integrated module will be on that list as well. If your Bluetooth device has a yellow exclamation point on its icon it means that there is a problem with it. Otherwise it means that the device is working properly.
Bluetooth
If the device has problems, select it and then click on the Troubleshoot button from the top menu. Follow the wizard's instructions and hopefully, Windows will find a solution to the problem.
Bluetooth
NOTE: If the device that you want to connect via Bluetooth to your computer has specific software applications made exactly for this kind of task, I recommend you to use that software. For example, if you have a phone with Bluetooth support it is a good idea to use that phone's "PC Suite" application on your computer.
Connect a Device to Your Computer Using Bluetooth
First you need to make sure that your computer can be seen by the Bluetooth device. In other words, you need to make sure the computer is discoverable via Bluetooth. You can access the Bluetooth settings on your computer by right-clicking the Bluetooth icon in the system tray or notification area, and selecting 'Open Settings'.
Bluetooth
Or you can simply search in the Start Menu's search box for bluetooth and click on the 'Change Bluetooth settings' search result.
Bluetooth
The Bluetooth settings window will now open. In the Options tab, at the Discovery section, check 'Allow Bluetooth devices to find this computer'. This will allow other devices to see your computer. When done, click on OK.

The wide range of devices that have support for Bluetooth can be a disadvantage because Microsoft can't collect and deliver driver support for every product that has Bluetooth capabilities. That's why every topic about Bluetooth connections between devices and computers is full of people complaining about problems with the connection, drivers or anything in between.
The best way to eliminate some of the problems is to switch from your old phone to a newer one with more modern capabilities and driver support.
